Stormzy’s a very Merky XMas review

As the year draws to a close, it’s crazy to think how quickly time has passed on everything that has happened this year. It feels like a lot has happened in my mind, but nothing has happened simultaneously. Yet here we are at the end of the year, ready to embark on another year ahead of us.

However, before we could get there, I stepped out for one more celebration: the second annual #MERKY Foundation #A VERY #MERKY CHRISTMAS party. Taking place in Croydons Fairfield Halls and hosted by the MERKY king himself, Stormzy, the two-night celebrations featured appearances from the likes of everybody, including Ray BLK, A1 X J1, Guvna B, Becca Folk, Michael Dappah, to name a few.

Kicking off with A Very #Merky Xmas: Gospel night, bracing the cold, train strikes and everything in between, crowds gathered for a celebration of gospel music and Christmas spirit, seeing a whole range of talent taking the stage, including Guvna B, Tab Worship, Called Out Music and Volney Morgan to name a few. Additionally, Stormzy himself took the stage to perform his fan favourite and all-around hit, Blinded By Your Grace Part 2, and Holy Spirit, one of the tracks taken from his third album, This Is What I mean

The occasion and theme of the night felt right as not only the spirit of Christmas but also the celebration of gospel music, which for me, has been the saving grace throughout this year. I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of gospel music? Speaking on the night and putting it together echoed this saying “The gospel night was something my team and I had spoken about for a while, and I said “this year, let’s actually do it”. We wanted to have a night for all the amazing gospel artists who are killing it and to really celebrate them. It just felt right in my spirit.”

After feeling high in the spirit of the Gospel music and all the energy and incredible vibes, day two saw people coming back for another day of celebrations, everything from Santa’s grotto, face painting, soft play, a free gift shop and much more. Hosted by the one and only Judi Love and Jordz Comedy, there was an entertaining lineup of talent. Including a performance from the BRIT School Choir, a #Merky Quiz, which saw ZeZe Millz, Comedian Michael Dapaah, and Stormzy go head to head, and of course, the #Merky Talent Contest. As well as, a performance from the British duo A1 x J1 at the end of the night.

The event was a celebration of joy and bringing the community together. Having gone through everything that has happened this year, it felt good to be in the Christmas spirit and let go one last time before the end of the year.
